Intensive green roof in Ghent with grasses and perennials
For this project in Ghent, we realised a intensive green roof that goes far beyond the classic sedum roof. Through a mix of grasses and perennials creates a roof that provides structure, colour and biodiversity all year round. The green roof contributes to a more natural cityscape and creates a living micro-ecosystem on top of the building.
The thicker substrate layer ensures a higher water buffering, which slows down the drainage of rainwater and reduces peak loads on the sewer system. In addition, this type of green roof acts as a additional insulating layer: it keeps heat out in summer, reduces heat loss in winter and extends the life of the roof structure.
With projects such as these, we demonstrate how unused roofs can be transformed into functional green spaces that contribute to a climate-proof, more pleasant city. This is an added value for Ghent and the surrounding area.
